Dzong Chode Shedup Choephel Ling Monastery
Just about thirty minutes walk from the Muktinath, the Sakya Dzong Chode Shedup Choephel Ling is situated. Lo-Khenchen Sonam Lhundup was the one of the best disciple of Ngorchen Kunga Sangpo established it during 16th century. Later on the great scholar Lodoe Tenzin developed it. Again, in 17th century the great abbot Lodoe Nyingpo made it as a main Buddhist teaching and practice center. Until the middle of the 18th century this monastery housed many monks from three different surrounding villages and some from upper Mustang. Local economic conditions and the lack of schools and healthcare facilities have forced many of the village people to relocate to larger villages or eventually go to Pokhara and Kathmandu or India. More and more monks are also leaving the area in order to achieve further spiritual studies. Often leaving of monks make the local people without necessery ritual performances.
Lama Soma Sangpo handled all the monastic activities in the critical situation. Therefore the monastry is still remain greateful to his kindness.
After the Chinese invasion in Tibet, H. E. Chobgye Rinpoche entered Nepal through Mustang with some of his disciple in year 1962 and rebuilt it in the same year as a recognized monastary. At first, Rinpochhe taught Lam'bres (The path and its fruits) for four monks. i.e. late Takla, late Nyima, late Phurpa and Lama Soma Sangpo. They received many important Tantric initiations, oral Sakya Trizin Rinpochhe, H.E. Chopgye Rinpochhe and so on.
